Backed by the Weinstein Company, the long awaited SALINGER features John Cusack, Tom Wolfe and Martin Sheen among others discussing Catcher in the Rye and its creator. Shane Salerno’s documentary gives audiences an unprecedented look inside the private world of Salinger they may not have been aware of, including his WW2 concentration camp experiences that had a darkening effect upon his psyche for the rest of his life. The film also gives a glimpse of the author’s distaste for the media, particularly his reaction of horror and rage when ambushed by the press. J. D. fought against any attempts to piece together a biography of his life, including memoirs by his daughter Margaret and former lover Joyce Maynard. trailer
In I’M SO EXCITED, Spanish provocateur Pedro Almodovar works the ins and outs of a bawdy romp like a gleeful ringmaster unleashed upon an expectant audience in his first all-out comedy. The film takes place almost entirely on an ill-fated commercial airliner. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers. With sly humor and an intensity of feeling, THE SPECTACULAR NOW creates a vivid, three-dimensional portrait of youth confronting the funny, thrilling and perilous business of modern love and adulthood. This is the tale of Sutter Keely, a high school senior and effortless charmer, and of how he unexpectedly falls in love with “the good girl” Aimee Finecky. What starts as an unlikely romance becomes a sharp-eyed, straight-up snapshot of the heady confusion and haunting passion of youth – one that doesn’t look for tidy truths. trailer
Jean Cocteau’s update of the ORPHEUS myth depicts a famous poet (Jean Marais), scorned by the Left Bank youth, and his love for both his wife, Eurydice (Marie Déa), and a mysterious princess (Maria Casarès). Seeking inspiration, the poet follows the princess from the world of the living to the land of the dead, through Cocteau’s famous mirrored portal. ORPHEUS’s peerless visual poetry and dreamlike storytelling represent the legendary Cocteau at the height of his powers. The final film in this year’s Rosa Goddard International Film Festival, presented by Sqecial Media. 7:15 Wednesday, September 25 only. In French with subtitles. trailer
